What's SUP?

I've been trying to understand what all the fuss is about SUP, alls seems a bit weird, when the industries been making boards lighter and more manoeuvrable, along comes SUP with bigger, heavier equipment, but then I saw this footage of Bonga Perkins on a SUP from his recent win at the Noosa Festival of Surfing, and maybe I can see a point to it now.
