Exclusive: The Surfer's Guide to Waves, Coasts and Climates
I've managed to get an exclusive on Tony Butts new book, The Surfer's Guide to Waves, Coasts and Climates. It covers everything from coastal geology, climatic cycles and big waves, to coastal erosion, tsunamis and the effects of global warming on the surf. All is explained in layman’s terms, with clear illustrations. Its a great companion for any surfer wanting to know more about what forms those all important conditions we all love to surf. I highly recommend it. Why exclusive? I actually have copies, while everyone else can only take pre-orders until the 10th of March, grab yourself a copy.

hello.i do love a south coast swell...but i feel compelled to write about the fact that, these days, at my local break...praa sands, when you get a nw wind every dick head and his dog turn up to argue rather than surf...today for instance..the surf by all standards was shit!! but still there were very agro idiots who would just shout, grunt and basically ruin the session for everyone else...espacially this one guy with a saffa accent who shouted at everyone and then proceeded to drop in on every one...its people like that i cant stand...i know that praa sands is full of kooks who make it annoying for the better surfers and very dangerous sometimes, but if you can surf half decent you should be able to get your waves without the need for all that bollox...i can! i need to add i have nothing against south africans, only this one who should piss off back to newquay..other than that, hope all the locals had a great weekend of surf...right on

Goaty, know what you mean, when a non-local surfer paddles out at your local break and starts mouthing off as if they own it, you just know they're a d*!khead. Its like some well know crews who are on record in the mags for supporting localism and then expect to travel away from home and have respect/waves. If someone is small minded enough to expect to own their home break, then they should also never expect to surf anywhere but their home break. I hate to say it but the old school rules of age, talent and years at a break having priority for the good sets has something going for it as it gets busier. Mind the surf schools teaching new recruits to the sport without any idea of basic surf etiquette also have something to answer for, but that's a whole other issue.

I regularly walk my collies down the beach. Jasper and Roland (they are the names of my dogs - Collies if you missed the fact earlier). Well we use Praa as a recreational facility most an evening and Jasper, Roland (my dogs) and I are sometimes shocked by the level of vulgarity that we can hear from the waters edge. For supposedly chilled bohemians, we (J&R&me) reckon you need a cold shower and an appreciation that the Universe's energy has been around nearly half a million of years and so you should get off your resin high horses and speak like gentlemen to one another.

Hear you down the 'Sands'.
