A stunning surf documentary of surprising depth, beneath which flows a mysterious undercurrent of menace and melancholy. It looks at the formative period during the mid-1970s when a group of badass young surfers from Australia and South Africa made names for themselves on Hawaii’s Oahu North Shore. Classic archive footage and talking heads looking back to a 70s “golden age” are all present and correct but Gosch’s film also has another angle, one that meshes the history of surfing with political history. The incomers – who saw themselves as the underdogs and innovators - were seen as arrogant white invaders by the local Hawaiian surfers, and a violent gangland war was declared on the new crew. How this played out makes for quite a story.
