Gwithian car park soon to fall victim to 24hr pay and display

Like most surfers I hate to have to pay to park at the beach, and it looks like another beach has fallen victim to pay and display, i.e. Gwithian Car Park, the slabs been poured so next the meters. Get ready to get your wallet out all year round, whatever the hour.

Gwithian pay and display slab 2010-04-25

Due to a Concern raised by Cornwall County Council via the local Police I have been requested to remove all comments that could be construed as encouraging criminal damage to the new parking meters at Gwithian.

An open invite to the council: I'd like to invite the council to publicly respond to us surfers on the benefits the newly installed meters at Gwithian Car Park will bring. Surfers as regular users of this car park have a major interest in how the additional revenue generated will be spent. It would be great to see some of the additional money go towards providing showers in the car park for instance or extending the lifeguard season so holiday makers also benefit.

Of course, some forward thinkin Council employee will recommend using some of the car park money to fund showers and other useful amenities for surfers and regular beach goers. I'm so thankful for the support surfers get!

You're lucky to have a surfer/locals friendly cafe at your break. At Sennen Cove the operators of the car park, part of which was leased off by the now disbanded Penwith Council, use clampers to impose £80 release fees on locals and tourists alike for minor time indiscretions caused by spending their hard earned money in their seasonal retail outlets in the car park. They also increase the parking fees most years. The County Council is only copying this money spinner. And why is it the fees are not rounded to £1 ,£2, £3 etc and are set at £2.30, £4.90 ?? It's because people don't have the exact change and always pay more than they need, so the car parks make even more money!! Cornwall County Council always needs money and its a shame that the old Penwith Council over the last 25 years leased out its assets to a favoured few a now everyone is paying for it. I don't spend any money in privately owned car park's businesses. Boycott Businesses Using Clampers. Support the businesses who oppose expensive parking fees.

You're right, we should support surfer friendly businesses. They have a lot more influence with the authorities than just us surfers. Useful allies if we intend to fight the parking charges.

Due to a concern raised by avid Surfhog readers via the awesome website, could you please request that the parking meters be removed as it could be construed as encouraging criminal damage!!
Goes both ways surely.

Is it my imagination or has there been an unofficial boycott of Gwith. car park? Even on the sunny days theres been about 4 cars. Not a bad idea but i think it will hit sunset surf harder than the council.
According to the council web page for gwithian car park there is no charge outside of 9-5, a parking attendant and no charge during the winter. This was updated on the 4th of may. About 10 days after the meters were installed!!!

Currently the meters are not in use due to an expanding foam incident. Back to paying 9-5 only.
Not gloating,just reporting :-)

Dave,
i take it the council have done nothing about responding to your open invite for dialogue?
CORNWALL COUNCIL I AM TALKING TO YOU
If you are still monitoring this site for clues of further damage to your machines, why not make use of the forum and have some real dialogue with the people who use the beaches all year round. You are CORNWALL Council and are meant to work to improve the lives and living standards of the people living in Cornwall.Charging 24hrs a day at Gwithian has a major impact on the people who use the beach before 9am and after 5pm.If we lived in the middle of a city anywhere in the country we could use the parks and woodlands for free, maintained by the local authorities, and often with free parking. Yet here we cannot drive any where in the county without having to pay to park at the other end.
The knock on effect is that we have less money to spend in local businesses and so they slowly go under.
Come on councillors, man up and justify the increase of the chargeable period from 8hrs(9-5)Easter 'til October to 24hrs/365 days. At the very least I assume we will be getting the public toilets and lifeguard cover for the equivalent hrs/day? No?!

its perthetic we got a load of fat people buying to much food from supermarkets but if you want to be healthy go down the beach and use the sea you get fu##kin nailed for it.
no wonder the youth get pissd off.
